Founding Team for Abacus Mind: Tangible tools to combat digital overwhelm
Task: Support the development of a functional prototype

About the project
Abacus Mind is creating a neuroscience-based ecosystem of physical tools for adults who need to set digital boundaries without relying on apps or algorithms. The ecosystem includes the CorkBox (a token-based audio device), phone storage boxes, adjustable abacuses, stacking stones, and hourglasses, all designed to support focus, attention restoration, and phone-free routines.
These tools address a key contradiction in digital wellness: most solutions use screens themselves (apps) to reduce screen dependence. Abacus Mind instead uses tactile interaction, clear visual endpoints, and materials with sensory warmth to support sustainable behavioural change. The system is especially relevant for neurodivergent users, creatives, and knowledge workers experiencing burnout.
The concept is rooted in Dr. Whitaker’s postdoctoral research at TU Dresden on tactile processing and embodied cognition and is being further developed within the EXIST start-up framework.
Who we are looking for

Your profile:
- Studies or degree in UX design, interaction design, product design, or related fields
- Experience with user research, wireframing, and interface layout tools
- Strong visual design skills (branding, illustration, typography)
- Understanding of accessibility and design for neurodivergent users
- Experience with physical product design or tangible user interfaces
- Ability to produce mockups, packaging concepts, and visual documentation
What you will do:
- Design physical form, interaction patterns, and visual language for the tool ecosystem
- Create the visual identity, branding, and adult-oriented aesthetic
- Develop illustrations and layout for the guidebook and documentation
- Design token systems, packaging, and modular interactions
- Conduct user testing with neurodivergent adults
- Collaborate with engineering to ensure technical feasibility and manufacturability
What to expect
- Opportunity to shape an entire product ecosystem
